Yesterday’s best bet

Feet, not tubes

The sky was clear enough to be outside. The river was low, 55.9 cfs, gage 1.37 ft, water 55°F, at 10:45 PM EST, so this was a feet day: fish the pockets and take the photo from the bank. Abrams Falls was a fit if the trail was open. Clear enough, too, to call the stables or Wild Laurel if they still had a spot.

Fishing

Gage 1.37 ft at 55.9 cfs. The river is low. Fish the pockets on foot. Don't try to float it.

Inside the park: one rod, artificial flies or lures, single hook. No bait and no treble hook. Seven-inch minimum on trout and smallmouth. A Tennessee or North Carolina license covers age 16 and older. No trout stamp.

Little River Outfitters wrote on October 4 that trout were taking dry flies and nymphs. Their dry-and-dropper was a Yellow Stimulator, Smoky Mountain Candy, Parachute Adams, or a Yellow Sally on top, and a copper-bead Pheasant Tail underneath. That is a shop note for early October, not a park rule.

From Wears Valley, the close water is the Little River at Metcalf Bottoms. Same park rules. Fish the pockets on foot if the river is low. Don't carry bait in.
